The museum was opened at a grand ceremony on June 27, 2001, with the participation of leading cultural figures, scientists, a cosmonaut, diplomats and numerous guests, as part of the program of celebrations of the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in Armenia.
The museum was created on the initiative of Prof. V. G. Gurzadyan.
